Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Designed as a companion piece to Irvin and Hiden's inspirational documentary film, The Dream Share Project, this refreshingly brief, exercise-focused guide is geared toward helping dreamers turn their creative aptitudes and fantasies into meaningful, sustainable work. The book is divided into chapters outlining how to identify core values, how to pursue them, and financial and practical concerns along the way. The visualization strategies, idea maps, and meditation exercises will be familiar to frequent readers of creativity-focused self-help titles, and some of the case studies are merely shopworn business book retreads. However, the book's unflinching practicality is a rarity in the genre: the duo readily and duly acknowledges the necessity of powering through the less-exciting, early stages of achieving one's goals, and they provide quite a bit of advice on how to deal with poor employment prospects, seemingly endless internships, and repeat rejection. The book is decidedly millennial in its outlook on the working world—every moment of giddy optimism is matched by a reminder of the inevitability of stumbling blocks and failure. But for dreamers hoping to keep their heads in the clouds and their feet on the ground, this is a great starting point. Agent: Steve Harris and Michele Martin, CSG Literary Partners. (July)

This book is ideal for anyone who is looking to make a major change in their life, or even for someone who's just looking to start that side project they always wanted to do. I'm here to tell you that, no matter how stuck you feel in your current situation, you can ALWAYS make a change.

Chip and Alexis give concrete, step-by-step strategies for practical parts of achieving a dream like saving money, making a business plan, and pitching your product, if you already have a goal in mind. But even if you're not sure what your "dream" really is, this book can help you figure it out. The cute illustrations, brief writing prompts, and short, to-the-point chapters make the book friendly and non-intimidating for those who feel that their goal is just too much for one person. With just a few minutes of dreaming a day, and the help of this book, you'll be surprised at what you can accomplish.

This book takes a seemingly unobtainable goal and breaks it down - in painstaking detail - to individual steps to reaching a dream. The genius of this book is how well laid out every step in the journey becomes, so that there are almost daily exercises or tasks that will incrementally advance you towards your "dream." A lot of people will tell their personal story of how they ended up making a living out of what they always loved doing, but this book isn't specific to any particular job, industry, or project. It manages to be an extremely detailed roadmap for nearly any "dream" scenario you might have. I think it would be invaluable to anyone, whether starting out in "the real world" or already several decades into "the real world" and not finding satisfaction in their everyday work. A must read!

I first borrowed this book from the library and loved it so much, I had to buy it. This is the ONLY "business" book I have found that truly helped me discover my passion. It is filled with exercises to help you find and build your dream - another reason I bought the book - so I could write my ideas right in the book as I went along. For those pusuing a creative dream, a great companion book to this is "Steal Like an Artist" by Ausin Kleon.
