Editorial Reviews
Review
A book review by Dr. Michael Slocum (not including Table of Contents or Table.)
The TRIZ Journal is pleased to announce the publication of Design for Six Sigma: A Roadmap for Product Development. Drs. Kai Yang and Basem El-Haik have delivered a tremendous research effort that will support the successful implementation of DFSS for years to come.
The book is organized into eighteen chapters. A table indicating the chapter content is included for your use.
The book also has a section at the end that contains a list of acronyms and their extended forms. The usual collection of references may also be used to gather source materials for additional study. This work is an extensive collection of topics relevant to design and design optimization and forms an excellent referential basis for DFSS endeavors. The text is easy to read and understand and contains many examples for conceptreinforcement. An understanding of calculus and matrix math will be very helpful for certain sections of the book (as noted in the table above).
Congratulations to the authors for their excellent reference work on the science of design. This text is the culmination and integration of several important areas of research. The integration of Axiomatic Design into most of the topics is a highlight of the text. Yang and El-Haik have published concepts that are included in this book in the TRIZ Journal3. The editors encourage the authors to continue and provide excellent works for our readers.
I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about design and the integration of various design methodologies. (The TRIZ Journal 2003-08-13)

5.0 out of 5 stars Your One Design Advertence June 13, 2003
By "rudy20"
Format:Hardcover
Challenges traditional thinking and approaches to product and service design. Has an nice flow. One can easily find key topics for reference. We plan to use as one of our foundations for training. Deep, new perspectives on "old" tools and there applications. Exciting! Regardless of your level of expertise, I think you will learn from this book. Helpful for practitioners and beginners. Everyone designing products or services should be aware of this book. A nice section on theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ). DFSS is de-mystified in this work. Relevant case studies and examples. Underlying principles are more easily grasped. List of applications is endless. Each chapter can add value to your business or organization. Shows how Six Sigma rigor can be combined with pragmatism for superior results!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the buy! April 1, 2004
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I have not found such a comprehensive book for design of six sigma. I started using this book for advanced experimental design and taguchi methods, but ended understanding the complete roadmap for design of six sigma. The systems approach allows an enthusiast reader to start anywhere, without having to spend time refering back to earlier chapters. The relatively newer trends as TRIZ and axiomatic design have also been nicely dealt with.
Overall, this is a very nice and easy read book, with excellent and well defined examples. A must for everyone who wants a quick refresher on the design principles of six sigma.

5.0 out of 5 stars Application Oriented June 30, 2003
By MK Sathya
Format:Hardcover
In recent times, there has been a lot of talk and hype about DFSS with very little substance thus far--until this one! I found the book an easy read, application oriented and a relatively prescritive approach to apply DFSS for products, processes and/or services. The sections on TRIZ and Axiomatic Design expose the opportunities largely untapped in the design world today. A must read book for organizations serious about Six Sigma--whether they are focused on delivering worldclass products and services to their customers or designing processes to run world class business operations--a thumbs up all the way!!

Format:Hardcover
This is an outstanding DFSS book for production development. It contains integrated information and some of which you could hardly find anywhere else, thus with one book in hand, you have all the tools to get to your destination. This is also a easy to read book providing the reader with a solid understanding- Concepts are clearly defined, real world examples/ case studies are fully described and the chapters are well organized. It can serve as a textbook for students/beginners and also can serve as a handbook for experienced engineers.
The title says it all- this is a roadmap for you to find the way correctly and easily. I am reading the book right now, and the book is really beneficial to me.
