Comment Was this review helpful to you? YesNoI originally read and used an earlier edition of this book at least 15 or 20 years ago, and upon my recent job search I used it again, this time the updated 2014 edition. It remains the definitive book on the subject of Getting the Offer.
I had my most recent job for almost a decade before being phased out on a budget cut, and upon returning to the world of job hunting and interviewing, I found myself rusty. At first I tried to wing my way through my first few phone interviews, relying on just my experience, and I found myself rambling and struggling for crisp responses to the questions being presented. I realized I needed a refresher, so I picked up this updated edition of Yate's book. It was EXACTLY what I needed.
This book puts you in the mind and chair of the interviewer, helping you understand his/her purpose and motivations in order to deliver the right responses. There is also still no better book that presents "Great Answers to Tough Interview Questions" than this one...it doesn't give you a word-for-word script (which would only prove to be obvious if you tried to respond that way in an interview), but instead it sets your FRAME OF MIND with the right ways to craft those responses in a natural way.
I especially appreciated how it prepared me for the "behavioral" interview style, where interviewers ask you NOT "how would you hypothetically handle this situation?", but instead "Provide actual EXAMPLES, ACTIONS YOU TOOK, and RESULTS" of given situations...a much tougher interviewing approach. I experienced just such a series of interviews for the job whose offer I eventually just recently received and accepted, and while the HR person told me that "many candidates find this interview style difficult", instead I ACED every round, because this book got me READY. I had REAL ANECDOTES already in mind for multiple scenarios, and when they were presented during the various rounds of interviews I was able to handle every one of them with no hesitation (including the dreaded "weaknesses/tough situations" questions).
