1. Read This If You Want To Take Great Photographs

I always worry when I see books and they have titles like this – you won’t read this book and instantly start taking great photos. However, it will give you a great understanding of your tool and where to point it. In a simple manner, this book will get you there a bit quicker. For me, I learnt photography the hard way about 25 years ago with and old Zenith 35mm film camera. Everything was a learning exercise and data had to be written down in a pad noting the frame counter to tally my results when developed. Nowadays we have instant images and data in our hands to work out what we’ve done, allowing us to make some kind of sense of what you just formulated.

This book has all the things you need to understand as a beginner. If you are just about to jump from your iPhone, compact or bridge camera to a CSC/DSLR, then this is right up your leading line. Or, if you have a CSC/DSLR and it’s still stuck in auto!

The usual questions are answered and explained; such as ISO, shutter-speeds and aperture – the main fundamentals of photography for your light-catching box. Then there is the creative side too, with direction to framing your image, composition, leading lines and rule of thirds. The book is written is a relaxed manner that is easy to read, with some cracking images from some amazing and inspirational photographers, new and old. There are simple graphics to help understand some of the technical terms or elements and it is nicely designed throughout. My only niggle was some of the comments that seemed a little condescending, like “Now go out and practice”. So if you ‘Read this and want to get a great understanding of your camera’… look out for this book.
